As an independent, non-profit organization the James John PTA does not receive any funds from Portland Public Schools. Instead, we manage a budget that balances meaningful expenditures and sustainable fundraising efforts. We are committed to providing family engagement events to our members and direct financial support to our school’s educators. Each year we fund field trips, supplies, books for our literacy efforts, music and other art enrichment programs for students as well as events such as our numerous family movie nights, fall Back to School and Harvest Festivals, and academically-linked events like Multicultural Night and the Spring Showcase. Our primary fundraising event occurs each spring, but we also rely on direct donations from members and friends on a one-time or sustained basis. Many of our direct donations are matched by employers as part of corporate matching programs. We also sell plants in the Spring, Spirit Wear and concessions at our movie nights. Our Winter Craft Fair generates much-appreciated revenue as does our popular restaurant partnerships, where a portion of a restaurant’s sales are donated to the PTA. It’s through these fundraising efforts that we continue our tradition of support for James John’s learning community.

Many businesses in our area support non-profits through employee giving campaigns and matching programs. Your donation to the James John PTA qualifies for these charitable donations and depending on your company’s giving practices, they may be able to set you up for monthly donations which they match. Multiply your support and realize a tax benefit at the same time. Check with your employers’ Human Resources Department for information about these opportunities. If you need information from us to help you set up these donations, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We offer for sale a line of James John-branded apparal in children and adult sizes. This Spirit Wear is intended to help bolster school pride and provide an affordable way to support the PTA. Our children’s-sized apparel are sold at 5% over cost and the adult items at a slightly higher mark up. Our intention is to deliver branded merchandise to families at low enough prices to make James John Spirit Wear as affordable as any t-shirts or hoodies found in stores. We earn enough from the sale of the adult items to provide a meaningful level of financial support to the PTA. Look for Spirit Wear sale tables at all PTA events and you can order anytime using our handy online store.
ANNUAL REVENUE (PROJECTED 2019-20)
As you can see by the chart above, a large percentage of our annual budget is funded by our Spring fundraising event. This year’s event will be an adults-on Bingo night in St. Johns with food, drinks and plenty of fun opportunities to support the PTA. Stay tuned for details about this event.
Winter Craft Fair
Our annual holiday craft fair brings local artists together to sell their handmade crafts. Along with a wide variety of gifts, the fair also includes a bake sale, raffle, and PTA spirit wear and poinsettia sales. This year’s Winter Craft Fair will occur on Saturday, November 30th from 11am to 5pm in the James John School gymnasium.
We are so fortunate in St. Johns to be surrounded by wonderful restaurants. We will endeavor to team up with a local restaurant to host a James John Night several times throughout the year, with a portion of the evening’s profits going to the PTA. By joining us for a greta meal with other James John families you are supporting the PTA while someone else does the cooking and cleaning! Check the Events Calendar for upcoming Restaurant Nights.
Several times each school year we open our auditorium, “The Lion’s Den” to the community for free movie nights. At each family-friendly movie showing we sell pizza, popcorn, candy and bottled water. These concession sales pay for our movie use license and fund our various efforts in the school. Click the button below for a list of this year’s movies.
In the Spring, yard and garden plants are offered for sale by the PTA. All of these plant sales generate revenue for the PTA while providing beautiful plants at competitive prices.
